search engine optimization There are many people out there that says Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a waste of time. The moment Google feels like bitch slapping you out of their face – your site is gone!

And there are people that says that SEO is essential because you can get FREE & Targeted traffic.

No matter. Both are right on certain counts. But this is a debate I’m not about to touch.

The only thing that is true is – if you are a online marketer or own a business on the web – SEO should be part of your online marketing strategic mix.

Let’s not waste further time. I’m gonna give you a keep quick list of tips on SEO so you can be up and running quickly.

You will soon have a site that is optimized and primed for receiving visitors who are searching for you!

So here goes – the SEO quick list tips:

1. Put in meta description, title tag and keywords on every single page. You can consider WordPress as your site platform. Easy to use, with tons of plugins for such optimizing purposes.

2. Keep your site light and clean. Meaning less HTML, iframes flash and Java script. Helps the page to load faster. And the web spiders to index your site better.

3. Submit your sitemap to Google, Yahoo and all the major search engines. And submit to all major quality and trusted directories while at it.

4. Put your keywords in alternate text for images.

5. Bold and italicized the most important keywords for individual pages. Be careful not to over do it, lest you want the search engines to think you trying to keyword spam.

6. Do a lot of deep-linking. Get as many links in to all your individual pages as possible. Better still from high authority and relevant sites.

7. Have your targeted keywords in your article title. Very important! Because that’s one of the very first area a spider looks at to determine if your page is relevant to a particular keyword search by a searcher.

8. Steer clear of link farms.

9. Make your URL SEO-friendly. Major CMS such as WordPress, Joomla and Drupal all have extensions that can create such URLs.

10. Leverage on social media platform such as Facebook, Yahoo Answers, Flickr, Technorati, Forums related to your niche…and so on…to help build links to your site. And it open the door to audience that really matters – not spiders – but humans.

Something I would add to expand on #9:

Keep track of what pages the search engines are indexing from your site and make sure there is no duplicate content displayed on separate URLs. I can’t stress how much of a boost I’ve seen from simply blocking the right directories in a Robots.txt file or with NoFollow links.

Those are great in-content tips, but remember that off page optimization is the most defining factor nowadays. Having premier content is good, but you won’t get ranked for that alone (although you did mention social media and deep linking).

Very useful tips, but linking is the toughest tasks. Other than reading different types of blogs and commenting on them, linking is pretty mechanical work.

My favorite points were numbers 6 and 10. Deep linking and social media are probably two of the most overlooked site optimization tools, but they are the two that I see the most results from. These two are completely worth trying out.

Submitting to Google Sitemaps is pretty quick at getting indexed. Having a link from a site with PR3 or up that links to you will get you indexed in days. I use this for all my clients. I haven’t found a good way to deep link my pages, but once I do I will use that strategy.

These points should form the basis of any website campaign however one thing to bear in mind is not to “over do it”, too much placement of keywords on the page or in the “alt” tag of images can have a negative effect, (ie spamming).

good point. it’s not about doing one thing or another. it’s about having a good mix, part of which should include seo. and really, when you know your competitors are doing seo, you can’t afford to stay out of the loop.

Each search engine uses different rules to determine how well a Web page matches a particular query…. As a result, building a single page that gets a good score in all the major engines is just about impossible… Learning how each engine ranks pages is also hard, since the engines often keep this information as a closely guarded secret…
