The Single Most Important Detail You Must Remember To Make People Like You…

name If you are a sales or a marketing person, one of the first thing you must do is to establish rapport with the person or party you want to sell to.

You want to make them like you. To trust you. With that done, half the battle is won.

So, how do you make them like you?

Simple. Make them feel as if they are worth a million bucks. Make them feel important. Make them feel that YOU…like them.

And one of the first step towards doing that is…

….remembering their names and using it often!

Often when we are introduced to new people, we forget their names at the next instance.

From now on, for your own sake, and your own business or sales sakes, make a concerted effort to start remembering all the names of people you come across with.

Even better, compliment how nice their name sounds.

That will totally rock their world! Totally… It really helps to open up doors and get them to open and warm up to you.

I tried that numerous times. All done with sincerity, of course. And the look of happiness on their face is just…priceless!

Don’t believe me?

Go up to a sales person at the departmental store. Look at their name tag and memorize it. If they are not wearing one, ask for it.

Then you talk to them. And when you have just ended your conversation, turn your back a little. Just a little.

And then turn back towards them. And say “Thank you, Dave (or whatever the person’s name is].”

Watch his face magically lit up – with pleasant surprise.

Try it. On everyone you know. On every business associates, contacts, new acquaintances.

Just go out there. And remember names. If you can’t remember, write it down. Associate their names with funny characters or abbreviations to help you remember better.

Do anything it takes. Remember people’s names – and use it.

You will be paid back many times over…

As usual, I like to hear your views on this. I’m all ears.

All Success,

You’re right! If people feel that they are important to you, they will surely return that kindness/importance you give to them. Appreciation for them is also important!;)

Guadagnare,

Hey. Thanks for dropping by! Actually there is one simple trick.

Keep a handy note book nearby. Once you are told the name, immediately try to find a place to have the name noted down. Done!

Another way is to associate their names to celebrities. Say a girl’s name is Kate. Think Kate Moss. Or Kate Holmes. Something like that…

I’m trying hard myself to remember names all the time too!

Cheers,
Jag

Well, I think somehow that helps! but with so many people you are dealing talking with everyday, it would be difficult to remember their names! Quiet tricky! :D

Hi Cohen,

True. Not easy to remember, but the effort will certainly be worthwhile!

Thanks man for the wonderful advice you have given. To be very honest i’m a very thankful man to everyone. But i didn’t know the importance of using a persons name. Now i understand why people frown when i address them as sir or ma’am.

rapport is very important! However be careful not to use that person’s name too much, as it will seem like you are just trying to suck up.

A helpful tip for remembering names:

Learn to concentrate and implant the name in your memory right at the time you hear it. To do this you first must make a habit of repeating the name back to the person. This action will remind you to store the name in your “Memory banks” each time you hear someone’s name, and, within a matter of a short time the “repeating” process can be discontinued.

Anyone interested in improving memory should give mnemonics a try. Simply try to picture a vivid image of the word you’re trying to remember and connect it to whatever person or context you need it for. If I meet someone named Jerry, I might picture Jerry Seinfeldt sitting on his shoulder, or him having Seinfeldts weird voice. Check out books on amazon for, they totally work and there are more advanced systems for remebering long sequences of numbers etc.

Thank you for posting this. It is probably my biggest pet peeve. When someone is trying to sell me on anything, it is an absolute MUST that they remember my name.

I’m good with names, but terrible with faces. For most people it’s the other way around, but the effects are similar :P
