Quit Being Perfect.

Quit being perfect. I see a lot of people holding up projects…delaying time…all because they want to be perfect.

But recognize this. There’s no such thing as perfect.

It’s always WIP. Work. In. Progress.

It’s a never-ending road when it comes to improvement.

What you want to do is just launch. And get it out there.

Get data. Get some results. And tweak from there.

If it works – scale. If not, dump.

Don’t let perfectionism get in the way of progress.

Do up a good chunk. And let rip.

If you keep obsessing about details…about getting everything in place…you will never get done. And time just ticks away. There goes your opportunity.

What do you think? I want to hear it.

To your success,

Jag Foo

Absolutely agree.
Although there does need to be a launch version and I strongly believe that every thing within the launch version should work. If it doesn’t leave it out.

First impressions count for a lot – better to have a small function set that works perfectly, than loads of great tools that keep crashing.

There a time for thinking and a time for acting. The more you think, the less you act. You won’t make any income by thinking about your business – you will by acting, analysing what worked, what did not and moving forward.

There is only thing in our hand, do as much efforts as you can and let the time do its job. If you are perfect your work, then nobody can hold your success. Whatever said above it true, the way to your success is don’t let the opportunities go. Many opportunities will come and go but the one who approaches the opportunities will achieve the success first and will remain life long.

Good thinking Jag :) but for some people is harder than that. Maybe you had this behavior since you were a child where everything has to be in order if not perfect. It can take years to change that, and for some they just have to accept it, and see it as a force in life generally.

There’s nothing worse than trying to see someone focusing on how they look, instead of being themselves. Trying to be perfect will never be accomplished, and most people make a fool of themselves every time they try.

Being perfect is alright some times, but I doubt that you can do it every time. Focus on what’s right in life and you’ll be successful.

People who are fond of bieng perfect all the time are called perfectionists. Their main problem and disadvantage is that they can’t live in a present moment and they are never happy with results of their work.

@Anna:

Perfectionism is a disease. It only slows progress.
What matters is speed of implementation. And constant
desire to improve.

@Allan:

It sure takes time to change. And if you
are so used to perfectionism, it can be quite
difficult. But certainly, you don’t want it
to be an unhealthy obsession.

The key is movement. Constant movement in
the right direction.

Jag

In this industry, competition makes us feel the desire to be the best, hence giving us the impression that perfectionism is ideal.

I, for one, am guilty of perfectionism. Creating a simple landing page, for example, takes me days if not weeks.

I agree. It is a sickness.

I agree with you. Perfection can not be touched. To make mistakes is a human thing, all we can do is to acknowledge mistakes and not repeat them.

You know what, Jag, what you just point out is entirely true. I, myself, was a victim of my own perfectionist attitude that I realize that I could never be perfect. In fact, that realization also made me see things differently–that things, as long as you see them as good, is enough, and whatever imperfections you see can always be fixed later on. From then on I believe in what I do and I am confident that I’ve given my best.

I couldn’t agree with this post more. If you wait for perfection, you may never start. Look at one of the most successful products in existence today, the computer. Do computers not improve and have new bells and whistles with each version that is produced? Of course they do, because the point of the product is continual improvement. Get something out there that works. People will still like, even if not perfect, and be rooting for you to make things better as you go along.

“Perfect” in a work sense is usually meeting the requirements and deadlines. I find perfectionists to be terrible workers, because they rarely get it done on time.

As soon as I realised its okay to make mistakes and NOT be so damn perfect things took off!
Nice post.

Based on my experiences, aiming to be perfect in your work shouldn’t hinder you to progress. I mean, you shouldn’t delay your work just to be perfect on it. For me, it’s okay to be imperfect sometimes as long as you can see the progression.

Here’s a great tip for keeping your desk clean. Examine each object and ask yourself these 2 questions: is this object required to get my work done OR does it bring me great joy to look at? If the answer to both questions is NO, then you have to remove it from your desk. Try it.

Looking forward to being perfect os not bad in general, perfectionism becomes damaging only if it prevents up from nornal healthy work and rest. It is better to see our masterpiece as a whole, but not to concentrate on its separate parts.

Being perfect isn’t always the best thing. Sometimes, some of us are so focused on doing everything right that we tend to do it completely WRONG. It’s human nature to do something wrong occasionally. Besides, we’re not all perfect :)

I totally suffer from this, especially in my business life. Whether creating a simple banner advertisement, or launching a new product, I always hold off until everything is just right… big mistake. Instead, I’ve found it’s best to test early and test often. A big key to business and marketing is to ‘fail quickly’!
