Procrastination Is Good

imageSay what? Procrastination? Good?
Isn’t procrastination supposed to be THE big evil?

Didn’t all the gurus proclaimed that the key to success is speed of implementation?

So why procrastinate?

Here’s why…

If you remember, I used to talk about the Pareto’s rule.

And that is 80% of what you do will give you only 20% of your results.

While the other 20% will lead to 80% of your results.

So…procrastinating is good…if you do that to 80% of the stuff that gives you little results.

In another words, procrastinate on low value stuff.

Work fast, hard and smart on high value activities.

Make sense?

Love to hear your thoughts.

Aahh, procrastination, it’s a big part of who i am. I spend a lot of time doing it but it works for me. I find that it allows me to really work out how to tackle whatever it is that’s bothering me. As confusious once said : Man under car with tool in hand may not necessarily be fixing car!

Interesting take. As long as you don’t procrastinate on the 20%. And what if the 20% takes 40 hours a week. Then procrastinating at all is troublesome.

I like how the Pareto rule sounds like, but I can’t implement it in my life:( I can’t receive 80% of the profit from 20% of the time. What concerns procrastibation, it is the best way out from the situation which you are not able to influence on.

@Ian:

You sure Confucius said that? I don’t think the car
was invented during his time. =)

@Anna:

Dig deep. And you will find out which are
the most valuable 20%. Then focus on it.

Everyday, you want to ask yourself,
“What’s the most valuable use of my time
right now?

Good luck!

This theory is truly right, not only in business, but also in life.
You should know that sometimes the Pareto becomes 90-10 or 70-30, depends on specific situation

I don’t thing that delaying a task is good, but prioritizing your tasks is!

In my work, when everything has to be done done “now”, prioritizing is the key answer, even if this means delaying some of the less-important issues.

I’ve been successfully implementing the Pareto rule in my own life – it works! It really works and helpes me to manage my time and use it more productively. I’ve reorganized also my time which i decide to use for helping my relatives and friends – i refuse to help in the case if they are able to cope with the problem by themselves and if they ask me for help because they are lazy. I prefer to help if I see that somebody can’t cope with something by himself.

This is true…If we would procrastinate on the the things that didn’t really matter as much and worked hard on the things that mattered we would be successful in whatever we where doing. Sometimes procrastination creeps in…and before you know it we’re procrastinating on the things that are the most important. So,if the tables where turned and we did this we would see a turn around in what we are doing.

Dear Jag,

This advice is well taken.

It sort of reminds me of Benjamin Franklin. He said “A stitch in time saves nine.”

By that Franklin meant that really looking at the situation (procrastinating instead of just hurrying), will allow someone to see the REAL problem and mend it before it becomes too big.

Thanks for restating BJ’s thought.

The problem with your advice is that it is easier said than done. A procrastinator will usually procrastinate not just on small, un-important stuff but the important ones as well. Once a procrastinator always a procrastinator, so in the end it isn’t just a good thing after all.

@Mirc:

A lot of good advice centers on placing priority on high value work. And let’s face it…high value work and having high value habits are difficult to put in place and carry out.

If it’s so easy…everyone will easily getting results. But it’s not. That’s why many people don’t do it.

That’s why only the most successful are where they are…because they are willing to make sacrifices. They are willing to pay the price.

Are you?

@Dr Ann,

Thanks for dropping by!

I love Benjamin Franklin. Thanks for his little quote. Very nice!

@Sally:

Great! Having a core understanding of the 80/20 is really the key to massive productivity.

Posted by

7 June 2010 @ 11am

Guys…

Not too sure if you are understanding me here.

I want you to think for a moment.

If you analyze your daily activities…you will realize that they are not created equal.

Different activities will give you different results.

For example, working on sales copy and optimizing it will bring you more sales. Surfing around aimlessly in Facebook and watching TV will not.

Most people procrastinate on high value work and spend a lot of time on low value stuff.

My message is to do the exact opposite.

Do more high value and little low value.

Do give it some though.

Best,
Jag

This is good advice but I think it’s more difficult to implement in practice. For one thing, there’s the matter of actually determining which activities are the high-value ones. This may not always be clear because often the low value activities are setup, or are required, in order to get to the high value activities. For example, if you get your sales from writing about current events, your high value activity is writing the content. But in order to have something to write about, you first have to browse around and look for news. Or, if you have a full time job, your income is constant throughout the working hours of your day no matter what activities you’re actually working on during those hours.

I truly believe in that 80/20 rule by the economist Vilfredo Pareto. Although this was at first business and most precisely a economic rule it now used in many activities of life.

If you do procrastinate from time to time it’s ok… as long as you understand that things don’t get done easily

Pareto’s rule is pretty interesting, assuming that you know which of the things that you do in a week bring you value. Sometimes you can’t know what things will bring you value and what things won’t. for instance how do you know which customers out of 100 are going to generate the top 20% of your sales? Even if you can identify them after 1 month of business it doesn’t necessarily hold true that they will be the same 20% that generate most of your sales value in subsequent months. Sometimes the 80/20 thing works though.

There’s another benefit to procrastination. That is, even if you are putting something off it is still in the back of your mind. So you are mulling over it subconsciously.

This contemplation can be very helpful, so that when you do actually get around to doing this task, you’ll perform it more quickly and effectively.

Recently I was really stressed and paid the doctor a visit. What she said can be summarized as: “we are not machines, we’re humans”. Basically you should focus on the 20% that matters, and leave the 80% for the future. Also don’t consider delaying the 80% as procrastination, otherwise you’ll become insane. Believe me I was on the border of insanity a couple of months ago, I wanted everything done “right now”. Slowly, I’m understanding that we’re humans, that we should take care of what’s important, and that taking some time off work is important too.
