How You Should Start Every Day For The Rest Of Your Life!

image

I’m a great believer of how you start your day will shape the rest of your day.

Start you day well…on a good positive, healthy note..and chances are…you will have a great day.

You will feel strong, fit and all ready to take on the world.

I’m very much influenced by the morning ritual of the late copywriting legend, Gary Halbert.

He wrote it in his newsletter, which you can find here:
http://www.thegaryhalbertletter.com/Newsletters/aslk_start_every_day.htm

Well…the morning routine obviously does a world of a good for him, seeing how successful he is.

I got the gist down here, as well as his rationale for his routine. I don’t follow his routine exactly…but it’s close. And I try to keep at it as much as I can on a daily basis.

Here’s the way he advocates on how to start your day (take it away, Gary!):

1. Set your alarm clock to go off 10 minutes earlier than usual.

2. The first thing, after you get up, is to immediately remake your bed.

3. Go to the kitchen, pour yourself a glass of water and drink it all.

4. Go to the bathroom, take care of "business," brush your teeth, wash the sleep out of  your face and eyes and brush and comb your hair.

5. Next, put on some exercise clothes like sweatpants, a sweatshirt and sneakers.

6. Leave the house immediately and take a 20-minute walk.

7. As soon as you get back, woof down a nutritionally-dense protein drink made by mixing the contents of a packet of Myoplex, Met-RX or Lean Body with eight ounces of fat-free milk and a banana.

8. Scarf down a packet of vitamins and minerals like Dr. Julian Whitaker’s "FORWARD PLUS."

9. Take a shower.

10. Dress in fresh, crisp clothes and go about your day.

Pretty simple stuff, isn’t it? But, I’ll tell you this: If you will do this every day in 1999, it will create a more positive change in your life than anything else you can do.

This regiment, although simple on the surface, has profound and somewhat complex and far-reaching psychological ramifications.

May I explain?

Thank you.

1. Set your alarm to go off 10 minutes earlier than usual. By getting a 10-minute earlier start, you tend to remove the "urgency" many of us experience as soon as we wake up. You’ll feel less harried, less hurried and a bit more peaceful.

2. The first thing, after you get up, is to immediately remake your bed. If you don’t do this, you will be starting your day… instantly… creating an "undone chore" which will nag at the back of your mind for the rest of the day. If you do do this, you will start the day without having added a single, niggling little thing to your "to do" list.

3. Go to the kitchen, pour yourself a glass of water and drink it all. You do NOT drink enough water. Nobody in America does. Water is the elixir of elixirs. It flushes toxins out of your body, provides an environment which lets your electrolytes and all other aspects of your biochemistry function at maximum efficiency.

4. Go to the bathroom, take care of "business," brush your teeth, wash the sleep out of your face and eyes and brush and comb your hair. You’re getting ready for battle: The battle to have a good day. Doing all the above will wake you up a little, freshen you up a bit and "set-you-up" to get going.

5. Next, put on some exercise clothes like sweatpants, a sweatshirt and sneakers. Make this a ritual. You are dressing for battle: An assault on the forces of negativism.

6. Leave the house immediately and take a 20-minute walk. You’re outside, you’re breathing fresh air, you’re getting your circulation going, you’re becoming more mentally alert. Some of the fog begins to lift from your mind. You begin to notice your environment, see the colors of the fall foliage, the bloom of a spring flower, the dew on the grass on a summer morning, the untrodden snow in mid-winter. NOTE: This is NOT exercise. This is a loosening up; a "defogging" of your mind and allowing your body to gently warm up for its daily tasks.

7. As soon as you get back, woof down a nutritionally-dense protein drink made by mixing the contents of a packet of Myoplex, Met-RX or Lean Body with eight ounces of fat-free milk and a banana. This will infuse your body with nearly all the vitamins, minerals, electrolytes, and other good stuff to help your body and mind function at peak throughout the day.

8. Scarf down a packet of vitamins and minerals like Dr. Julian Whitaker’s "FORWARD PLUS." More insurance you’re getting the minimum (at least) ingredients your body needs to run efficiently.

9. Take a shower. Part of the ritual of getting ready to battle the day.

10. Dress in fresh, crisp clothes and go about your day. Ritual completed. You’re loosened up, oxygenated, clean, crisp, nourished, starting your day with no added baggage.

Again, you can read his fabulous newsletter here: http://www.thegaryhalbertletter.com

It gives you a real education in marketing.

I’ve read the entire newsletter and is engrossing. Regarding the “how to start the day” tips, I agree with most of them, just that in the morning I prefer to eat something sweet (apart from fruits & cereals). It just makes me feel better!

A surprisingly rational approach to getting started with your day. The idea of going for a walk, rather than a run even, and warming-up your body in a gentle way is a great idea. And leave it to a copywriter to use words like “woof” and “scarf” as his verbs of choice for consumption!

The trouble is, if you get up ten minutes earlier every day, pretty soon you’ll go backwards around the entire 24-hour clock. Anyway, you forgot the next step — throw up and go back to bed :D

Just kidding — I like your information; very useful in general. Was going to unsubscribe from your news letter but you reeled me in again — it’s pretty good!!

I think these are some great tips. I really need to work harder on not using my snooze button. Waking up late always sets the day off to the wrong start.

Except for the water-drinking- and bedmaking-part I dont really want to take most of the tipps. Especially the tipps involving food are a bit to biological and nutrional to be helpful. But i read some literature focusing more on the routine than on the ingridients. so this is a good addition.

You really made some great points here. It’s definitely all about how you start the day. My morning routine consists of a lot of the things you mentioned above, the most important of which are making my bed immediately after getting out of it, eating a pretty large, nutritional breakfast, and going to the gym (at least more often than not). I once heard that the best way to start the day is to start it as if on purpose. I can’t take credit for those words of wisdom, though I think there’s definitely a lot of truth behind them.

Impressive tips. Simple yet so true and effective. These tips are really helpful, but I don’t recommend for everybody to rely only on them. Everyone has its own best methods to start a good day. For example, I don’t like using artificial vitamins from pills. I like changing them into fresh fruits every morning. That gives me vitamins and satisfaction of a delicious thing. Some exercising would be great idea as well.

What I don’t get is why the author is encouraging the use of protein shakes when you’re not exercising – that’s simply not a good idea. Better off eating a bowl of oatmeal or something healthy for breakfast or maybe just do some proper exercise in the morning instead of just walking?!

Going to give this ago!

It’s nothing like the start to my days, they go something like this…

1) Set the alarm for about 1hr earlier than I need to get up (to give me chance to have a layin)

2) Get up and drag the wife out of bed (otherwise she would be there all day)

3) Go to the bathroom and take care of business

4) Go to the kitchen and make breakfast

5) Go to office, eat breakfast and work all day

Maybe this is why my days always seem like such a drag.

I personally believe that an alarm clock is the enemy of productivity. Unfortunately, most companies have a policy where people are paid by how long they spend working, rather than by how well or how much work they get done in that time.

Making people keep strict hours and having them wake up unnaturally is going to mean that no one is running on 100% since it is much harder to work when tired.

What to do first? For me, it’s thanking the Lord that I am alive. PRAY and GIVE THANKSGIVING. Read the Bible and meditate on it. If you start your day with a prayer, everything else will just follow.

Your time is limited, don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma, which is living the result of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinion drown your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition, they somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary. Great blog!

Theoretically, your advice of how to start the day is great. In fact, it would be awesome to create a routine from this, but unfortunately you cannot do this every day. Because you don’t have time, you have to go to work, feed the kids, etc and everything that you do you do it in a hurry. Maybe this could be a good plan for weekend. And then you can gain the good energy for the rest of the week.

i like how following routines in the morning just makes my day feel so much better, and also makes me not stressed in the morning.

I start my day in a very different way. First of all, I don’t use an alarm. I didn’t when I had a job and I don’t now that I’m self employed. I believe getting enough sleep is just as important as drinking enough water. Some years ago I read that if you get up slowly, you will have more energy during the day. So when I get up I make a cup of coffee and take it back to bed. There I watch a few news snippets or browse the Internet. When I do get up I take care of my personal chores, get dressed, make the bed and do my Jane Fonda workout. On sunny days I have breakfast on the patio otherwise at my desk. I usually work all day till about 10 at night. Works for me.

I’ve read the entire newsletter and is engrossing. Regarding the “how to start the day” tips, I agree with most of them, just that in the morning I prefer to eat something sweet (apart from fruits & cereals). It just makes me feel better!

Hi,

These are all very simple steps and they are ritualistic.
There is a lot to be said for rituals. They keep you grounded. I do a lot of these things and have done them for years. I always know how my day is going to start.

Thanks for the reminders of some things I don’t do that I could start doing.
Sincerely,
Geri

Sometimes your whole day is decided based on how you start it. A good start to the day can dictate how it will go.

Try to make a fixed schedule and stick to it. It’s easy to plan things but difficult to execute. Make sure you’ve a simple schedule and you’re committed to it.

Great post. So many really successful people do morning rituals to get themselves pumped up for the day and in the right mindset. I don’t know if you’ve ever heard of Eben Pagan Jag but he is a multi-millionaire and a big advocate of morning rituals.
