persuasionFar too often, people only think about themselves.

They only think about their favorite radio station - WIIFM - What’s In It For Me?

And because of this, many of these people are very poor salesman.

And also because of this, there are only a few, comparatively, who know how to turn this around to become GREAT salesmen.

How?

Simply by thinking in terms of the person whom you want to sell. Since you know he is always thinking about what’s in it for him - it’s your job to understand what he really wants - and giving it to him!

Help him by getting what HE wants. And in turn - he will help you back by getting what YOU want.  By buying your goods, services or whatever you want him to do.

It’s that simple.

To sell, we have to snap ourselves out of the mind-set that we must do everything that is geared only to our favor. Clever salesman know how to create a win-win situation.

Genius salesman know how to create a situation that is slanted towards his favor..and yet make the other party think otherwise!

I remember, there was once, when this certain person contacted me to collaborate.

I met him thinking we might do something good together. And guess what? Throughout the whole meeting, he was only interested in how to get my help on this…and that…and that…and that….

Not that I mind…BUT…BUT…there was NOTHING about what do I get in return…ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about any mutual benefits.

It’s all about HIM…HIM…HIM…

And you know…salesmanship is about…YOU…YOU…YOU!

Now you know why Barack Obama always says this - "It’s not about me. It’s about YOU!"

USA is gonna get a good salesman as a president. =)

Anyway, needless to say, I didn’t do any deal with that guy. Totally self-centered.

Now…I wanna hear what you think. Agree? Violently disagree?

Keep ‘em coming!

That might be the BEST title of any article I have ever read. Maybe not that good, but a really strong title that is so true especially on the internet. The more resources you provide the better you do.

That’s great advice. Too often people think that they know what their customer wants, when in actuality, they have no idea at all. If you can figure out exactly what it is that your ideal customer needs, you’ll surely do well in this life!

I admit in many of my past relationships I have been quite selfish, but after my divorce I learned alot about myself. Now I do more to go out of my way to help others and now my relationships are stronger!

This is another great article to read. Yes, I think it’s important that in making sales we have to think also the needs and wants of the customers.

I read about this exact same principle in a book, even down to the WIIFM thing. I guess you must have come across the same thing. In any case, I do agree, and it is important to help other people, not just to help yourself, but to just help.

    @ Michael:

I’m not an American, so Obama won’t be my president. But I’ll be rooting for him. Yes, I’m sold. At least much more than McCain has.

    @ Nicoolo:

Ah yes. Obama has to deliver all right. To prove he is not like a lot of other politicians in this world - all talk and no action.

@ Discount Area Rugs, US Citizen, Attorney:

I think we all have a common understanding here. Getting the sales is really about understanding the customer, and fulfilling his needs/wants.

Definitely some good ideas. Let me share how I’ve implemented the “win-win” concept of selling:

Coupons and price discounts - buyers don’t want to pay full price, and you can set up a business model where you only get paid if they find a way to save money on their purchase.

Free services - there are a lot of free services out there that are really useful yet profitable. Find some quality ones and conversions are no problem.

If you help the customer, they’ll be back - and they’ll bring friends!

I agree that Obama is selling his message brilliantly. I watched a speech earlier in which he did exactly what you described in your post.

This makes people warm to him. But he is also setting himself up for a fall. When people realize he won’t deliver they’ll feel ripped off.

Here in Australia we have a PM who had all this nice talk about how much he cared and what he was going to do for us. But he isn’t delivering - on the contrary, things are getting worse for those on the bottom of the heap (and not just because of the global financial crisis).

He’s still popular, but there has been a reaction against his party in state elections. There are a lot of disappointed people, with more growing all the time.
I think he’ll be a “oncer”. I suspect that if Obama wins, the same will happen to him.

I agree. It wasn’t selfish, it was fair to yourself. It wouldn’t have been right for you to do all the work for him, teach him all those things, and get nothing in return. Not that I’m selfish either :D I believe in “paying it forward” but you can only pay it forward as long as you get something back. You only have so much of yourself/time/money/effort to give…

    @ Monavie:

It’s about establishing a mutually beneficial relationship.

    @Matt:

True. Obama is making a lot of promises. Good thing is that people are believing it. But if these promises are not kept - people are gonna lose faith fast.

It was just like a role in a theater that each and everyone have a role to play. And in order for it to be successful you should do your part and trust your co-artist. And in the end you will see how good your play will be.

Same as to President Obama in order to solve the economic crisis, the people around him should trust him and do their part as a good citizen.

Bottom line, it’s what being a good salesman is all about. You have to make the customer feel like it’s all about them, as if their time is the most important thing in the world. You have to hang onto every word. Sales is a tough gig.
