Upgraded to WordPress ver 2.1

I’ve have not been putting in any post for the past few days. The reason was that I was busy looking and scrutinizing through the upgrading documentation for WordPress.

For the uninitiated, WordPress is an open source blogging platform, and a great one at that (will be putting in a post on that soon)! And yes, I use WordPress to power the blog that you are reading now.

Back to the upgrading bit, I have to say I was a bit jittery at first. I’ve never done any prior upgrade of WordPress (not even those minor ones), and the change from my previous version to the new one (ver 2.1 Ella) seems to represent a big leap for me!

I had to be very meticulous of the backing up process, and made sure all the database and files were properly covered in case anything unexpected were to crop up.

All this while, while going through the upgrading process, I was really careful to make sure that the right files are not deleted.

So there I was, following the upgrading script faithfully, going through word by word.

I really have to give credit to the WordPress team for coming out with a detailed step by step plan, which makes the process rather easy for a non-technical person like me.

Thank god that the upgrading process went without a hitch! No important files were accidentally deleted. (I once deleted a post by accident, and boy was it troublesome to come out with a new one!) Phew!

With the upgrade out of the way, came the hard part!

I had to redo every single modifications I’ve done with the previous version, which are mostly plugins related.

Also, apparently some of the plugins I used previously did not work with the new version, and I had no choice but to find replacement ones which are compliant.

Other than that, I noticed some strange things happening to my blog. The new version is supposed to be more stable, but I still think there are some bugs lurking somewhere.

My ‘Contact Me’ page mysteriously disappeared and I had to redo it again. Some modifications to the word editor within WordPress were behaving ‘weirdly’. In addition, some pages which I set to ‘private’ status were shown up as ’404′ error when I tried to access the pages. Frustrating for me indeed! smile_angry

My advice to all people out there who wish to upgrade, is to hold back for now, until the next minor upgrade for this version (2.1.x) comes along, which I’m sure will not be too far away

Overall, it’s has been a tiring exercise. Gonna get some sleep!
