Internet – Greatest Invention ever or Ticking time bomb?

Pic courtesy of SpookShows

In almost everything we do, we need the Internet. Whether is it to do research for a project, to find out the latest happenings, to trade or even to find love, we just simply cannot escape the influence the Internet have on us.

Businesses too are in great reliance of the Internet. It has made the world smaller, giving unmeasured convenience to everyone.

Imagine being able to send and receive money at an instance, or waking up to find that the value of your PayPal account has just increased due to a successful sale online. Yes, it is wonderful.

I’ve personally seen close up how on how the Internet can bring people together. People can form partnerships and joint ventures without even having to meet face to face. Physical distance is rendered irrelevant with just a mere click of a mouse.

To many, the Internet has emerged to become like a extension of ourselves. To me, it’s more than that. It’s a vitally pertinent tool to me.

So let’s put aside everything and imagine, what if on one fine day, we all just wake up to find that the Internet is no longer working?

We are all gonna be really totally royally screwed!

Internet Cafe in Hong Kong resembling a ghost town. Obviously feeling the effects of the Internet fallout due to the earthquake in Taiwan which caused major disruption. Pics from Google News

This is exactly what happened last week, as a major earthquake in Taiwan caused some underwater cable to snap, resulting in major havoc being wreaked in the Internet world, affecting countries like Korea, China, Hong Kong and countries from the South-East Asian region.

During that period, I couldn’t do anything. Emails can’t be checked. Deals have to be put on hold. I couldn’t access my website. Trades cannot be processed. Communication are cut off as the Internet slows down to a crawl.

To say that I was frustrated is a gross understatement. Two word for Internet Marketers especially - Absolute

This problem wouldn’t be such a big deal but for the fact that we are becoming too reliant on the Internet, to a point that it has become a double-edged sword.

We need the Internet so much that we cannot do without it.

Is there any alternative to the Internet that we can fall back on? I can’t really see or find any.

I guess it’s a wake up call for us to make an effort to rely less on the Net and diversify away from it. No mean feat. If you have a solution, please tell me how.

As nice as it would be in some ways to be less reliant on the internet, it really isn’t possible in many cases, since many of the alternatives are too time and cash intensive. We’ve definitely become spoiled.

I think this is a pretty good idea. Some ppl are dependent on the Internet for everything, this just makes it more convenient for them.

This is one of the posts thats deserves a ( bare minimum) once a year reading. I try to ask myself the ( what if no internet ) question at least once a month.

The answer usually results in a trip to the gym :).

That could also be said about cell phones. Just watch people when they are in a area that has no signal i think they are going to go crazy when they can not use cell phone. Both can be good but you should not run your life around them.

The goverment had own internet when it started. They made it and used it. Now they let everyone on same one. Thier is alot of info that they have that should not be accessed by some people. The only thing i think is bad is they do not have own secure internet and let public have thier own.
