A Successful Niche Marketing Experiment

nichemarketing In July, I embarked on a mission. To create a niche site, that will bring me a nice small side income - on autopilot mode.

So there I went. I built it and added content. After which I periodically added in new content just to keep up the maintenance.

In the end, I have a total of 15 articles. That was about it. I have not updated the site for more than a month.

It is basically hands off for me. But the commissions from the referrals kept coming in.

Truth be told, I seemed to get more commissions when I do nothing than when I do something on the site. Strange. But true.

Well, I guess that is applicable only when your site is up and running smoothly.

In fact, I even had a 400+ USD day in commissions for that site just a few days back.

I must say that I was rather please with myself, considering the returns in comparison with the work I’ve put in.

So Why Am I Telling You All These?

Certainly not to brag. It is not a major income earner anyway. I just want to bring to your attention about several points, which are:

  • It is possible to earn on the Internet. If you take action.
  • It is possible to scale up. One site may bring you say, maybe $800 a year. How many similar sites can you create? And how much more money can you bring in with that? It’s a matter of duplication and scaling up.
  • With the Internet, you can set up a site with low cost, low risk, and yet have high margins - that can recur again and again - with just a 1 time effort.

You may be thinking, “UTTER BULLSHIT!”

Well. It Can Be Done.

That is all I can say.

I mentioned how to do a niche site before. And here are some tips again.

1. Go really niche. Get focused on one particular product. Don’t dilute the content with other irrelevant information.

2. Provide highly useful content that actually HELPS and adds value to the reader.

Your visitors are a discerning bunch. No half-baked crap is tolerated. If they don’t like what you have presented - BAM! They are out of your site faster than you can scream “MUMMY!”

3. Optimize the site. Use WordPress and its numerous plug-ins to search engine optimized your site. I won’t go into the nitty gritty of it. You can do a search of WordPress SEO plug-ins, and you will find plenty of information on this matter.

4. Have the main keyword in domain name. Very important. It goes a long way in helping your site rank in the search engine for your targeted keywords.

5. Have important keywords in your categories.

6. Offer an incentive. What I did was to offer a discount rebate for those who sign up through me. It is actually a no-brainer.

I was never in negative cash flow. The money doesn’t come out of my pocket first. I will always wait till the commission is in the bank before a portion of it is taken out to offer my customers as a rebate.

Sure I get less commission. But so? I get more sign ups because of this - and the gain in profits far outweigh the rebate losses.

But anyway, here is the kicker. Most people buy through me without even approaching me for a rebate. Perhaps they got good value out of the content I gave already. =)

7. Build a list. And keep in touch with your subscribers. Sure you have to market to them to make your effort monetarily worthwhile. But remember - provide value - always!

8. Take action. Loads of it. Yes, I have repeated it countless times. Well, it is always an evergreen advice, isn’t it?

Alright, my friend. Go forth and make some money!

    Hi Victor,

    I’ve seen both your sites.

    Two suggestions:

    1. Reduced the number of advertising banners. It’s a bit of a turn off.

    2. Why not switch to WordPress for your sites?

    You can do it Victor

    Cheers,

How great for you! It’s nice to have somse projects that DON’T require a daily or even weekly time commitment. Personally, I only have time to focus on a couple of my sites. The rest have to be on autopilot since I only have time to work on them every couple of weeks or so.

    Hi Makeupgirl,

Yep, the thing about autopilot sites is that you can create one and just hands off.

And you can proceed to create the next. And the next and the next.

However you can’t really have a hands off approach on a site that you want to grow and develop long time though.

Nice work Jag. But you might want to double check on the cash incentive portion. Not all affiliate programs allow that.

    Hi Louiss,

    Hmm…Can I not say?

It doesn’t matter much. Just find a solid product with at least 10,000 searches with less than 5000 competitive sites and you are in business.

The numbers are just a guide though.

Just follow the above tips in this post and you will be fine.

Thanks Jag, so you get the product from which affiliate company? Clickbank, cj or else? Ready to learn more.

    Hi Louiss,

As long as it is a good product with good value - and at a reasonable high price, I will consider it.

By the way, the product is not from clickbank. It has its own affiliate program.

What you’ve written here seems seems to go against conventional wisdom. I was always told that to make money online you need new, constant content.

Is this kind of autopilot strategy only successful on extreme niche sites?

Regardless, I like the thought of a low maintenance project, even if it only brings in a little money every month.

    Hi panel management,

    Well, yes. And no.

For blogs, it is always good to have fresh and updated content. If you depend on your blog to earn an income, then I will say yes - new constant content matters.

With that said, it is definitely possible to have a site with content up, and then left to run on autopilot - and still raking in the cash.

I still do periodically update the sites when I have new content. If not, I will just let it run on it’s own.

    hey..

so this is my firt comment here.

good article. here are my take:
#4 - if you intend to include a brand name/product name/celebs name in your domain, check the related policy. Some companies are frown upon this practise. case in point, Croc sent a C & D to a Croc fan site as the domain contains the word ‘croc”.

as for rebate.. works like charm for most cases but don’t do this to Clickbank, they do not like it. and… rebate + bonus = killer conversion !

last but not least.. wanna generate some buzz to your blog? put up the commission screenshot, and watch the links love come in.. :)

    CY,

    Wah! Finally. You’ve commented.

Good point. Yep, both are agreeable. So I got that covered. Yes, it is something to take note of.

Yes, again another notable point you made on Clickbank. I don’t promote Clickbank products anyway.

As for screenshots, I may if I want to sell a product. For my blog, I will just keep it as it is.

    Thanks!
