email marketing open click through rates I've been fiddling around with email optimization in the past week.

Thinking to myself...how can I improve my open and click-through rate to my list?

Yes I'm always thinking of improving these email metrics.

Because any small increase in conversion can mean a significant increase in profitability.

This is especially true if you use email marketing as a sales channel.

Anyway...I thought I do a split test. Or more specifically split broadcast in this case.

I will spare you all the details and dive straight into the methods I used to improve my open and click through rates (the results you see in my post title is based on just 2 tests).

Improving Open Rate:

Personalize your email subject headline with your subscriber's name. That's it.

I found that a name-personalized email headline generally outperforms one that doesn't.

You will need a good email marketing solution for this. I'm using Aweber and it performs brilliantly for me.

Improving Click Through Rate:

Keep the email as short and focused as possible.

And have the same link repeated twice.

Ok. That's it!

The length of your email content definitely plays a huge part.

Works even better if you have a cliff-hanger styled teaser that leads the person to want to click on to the link.

Think 'benefit + curiosity' and you got a winning formula.

Simple ain' it? And it works.

As usual, let me know what are your thoughts. My ears and eyes are peeled.

All Success,

jagfoo

Personalizing your email is one of the important factors that could help you to improve your email open rate. If you send an email to someone addressed to his real name, there’s a big possibility that he/she will open your email. Thanks for the very useful tips! :)

These are great suggestions - I’ve done email marketing and I almost gave up on it - but perhaps it’s not the medium that’s wrong, but my approach.

The headline is definitely one of the most important parts. You get that persons’ name in there and it becomes exponentially more effective in garnering clicks and interst.

Great tips! I also believe the headline is a very important factor. I know from personal experience that I don’t open anything with an odd title. Cliff-hangers work great!

The problem with putting the recipient’s name in the subject line is spammers are already doing it. I get some bizarre subject lines with my name trying to get me to open them and there is no way I am going to. I am already becoming immune to that tactic.

    @Myfinancebutler:

Don’t give up. Email marketing is an fast, effective, not to mention, cheap way to reach out to your target audience. Use it.

    @ tv bracket:

You got a point. However the key thing here is that we make sure that before we even email any people…we ensure that we get their permission first.

It’s one thing to receive email from someone you have given permission to…and another from someone you dunno at all.

Have you tested this method on your list? If not, do try it. And let me know your results.

    Cheers,
    Jag

Jag, you really composed the perfect keyword for this.. “cliff-hanger styled teaser”.. I would consider the cliff-hanger styled teaser trick would deliver more quality clicks with effective conversions. Some of you here might also realize that some lists have even started to put cliff-hanger styled subject without names. The trick sometimes seems to also work with immune people like me..

Thank you for your timely advise. I would be interested in reading your thoughts on how to optimize emails for spam filters. It seems that this is one of the greater issues with email marketing.

I agree with you that the two major components are the headline and the length of the email (of course the content has to be relevant. The headline hooks you into reading the article. The length makes you want to keep on reading.
