You know it’s important to know your customer.

Because if you know what your customer want…you can give it to them…and in return, they will buy more from you.

They get what they want. You get more profits. Everyone is happy.

That said, when it comes to online marketing, it’s not just enough to know what your customer wants based on your research.

You want to go to the next level for a more comprehensive, in-depth understanding.

I’m talking about “spying” on what your customer is literally thinking and doing on your website – real time!

Don’t worry. There’s nothing sinister or sneaky going on here.

This is pure marketing intelligence. Just as you need good enemy intelligence to win a war, you need good customer intelligence to win more profits!

Just imagine…what if you have access to behavioral analytics that can allow you to:

Watch over your customer’s shoulders to analyze every mouse click, keystrokes and scrolling patters…

Analyze where your customer is focusing his attention on your webpage to see what interests him and what doesn’t…

Track where his eyes are mainly focused on…

Discover how far down your customer is scrolling…which links he is clicking on…

Observe how your customer reacts to forms (too long or too short?)

Discover where is your customer dropping off in your sales process

Discover how your customer responds to hyperlinks through click hover time, click hesitation time, etc…

Do you think you can use these valuable data to optimize your website to make your sales process more effective?

Do you think you can garner greater profits as a result?

You bet you can.

This is where ClickTale comes in => http://www.clicktale.com

ClickTale is an amazzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzing analytics tool.

The behavioral analytics they give you are so comprehensive. The data you get is simple invaluable to your business.

If you are a serious marketer, you need to have ClickTale in your arsenal.

I mean will you go to war without your tanks and fighter jets?

You don’t want to go to online war without ClickTale.

I’m probably scratching the surface of what ClickTale can do here.

I’m still exploring ClickTale myself. And I can tell you how amazing it is to see what exactly is a visitor doing on your website.

Every click…every scroll…every damn action…can all be tracked. It’s scarily powerful.

You can sign up for the free version here:

Let’s say you’ve come up with a great new website name. It’s catchy and unique and you’re lucky because no one has registered it yet.

The only question now is what top-level domain (TLD) extension should you get? .com? .us? .info? There are a few hundred TLDs to choose from so how do you pick?

It’s always a good practice (if you don’t mind spending $35/year) to purchase the .com, .org, and .net extensions of your domain name – especially if you plan on building a large brand on the internet. Most of the major search engines give a lot of value to these three extensions when it comes to "exact match" searches.

Let’s say you own Example.com but you didn’t bother buying Example.net. Well someone could go and buy Example.net and just park the page or he or she could rank for your brand name or product. An example of someone else buying up a branded name is Twitter.ca. If you type in Twitter.ca you will not go to the Twitter service that you normally use – instead there is landing page.

Twitter.com might be able to take Twitter.ca to court over that name but this problem could have been easily avoided for $10/year.

Google doesn’t give any "exact match" value to most other extensions such as: .info, .biz, .tel, .us, etc. That’s why you don’t see these extensions ranking in the search engines as often as other TLDs.

The search engines do give value to many local extensions such as .ca for Canada, .co.uk for the United Kingdom, .de for Germany, and .fr for France etc.

Deciding which other TLDs to purchase is entirely dependent on the website you are building.

Here are a few choices:

Choice #1

You could buy up the main country extensions that actually help in ranking for those territories then re-direct them all to Example.com. So let’s say you’re selling a lot of products in the UK. If that is the case you might want to buy Example.co.uk and have it redirect to Example.com for now.

The best thing you can do is buy the domains for the countries that you’re sure you will market to in the future – just so that the domains are locked up.

Pros: You’re protected against "squatters" and you pretty much own your brand in the markets you’re hoping to pursue. It’s relatively inexpensive and you can develop those sites whenever you want.

Cons: Simply buying a domain like Example.co.uk and redirecting it to the Example.com wont help your rankings in the UK. That’s why sites like Pepsi advertise in Canada as Pepsi.ca instead of Pepsi.com. They want content focused to that country but they also want to rank for cola related search terms when people search in Google.ca.

This doesn’t mean Example.com wont get business from the UK right now; it just means that if they also build a site for Example.co.uk, they would rank better and convert better for the terms they are targeting in the United Kingdom.

Choice #2

Buy up the main country extensions that actually help in ranking for those territories (IE. Example.ca, Example.co.uk…) then build separate sites and host that content locally in those countries. You will need to write new content to avoid duplicate content issues but you can also cater your content, language and images specifically to that country.

Pros: Your brand will rank better in each of those countries. People like to see their own extension in the domain name to signal location, pricing, currency, shipping, etc.

Cons: Time & costs are higher. You need to put up different sites for each extension & you will also need to build links to each site. Thankfully the competition will likely to be far less than in the US because the markets are usually smaller in other countries.

Choice #3

Use sub domains for each country. In this case you would use something like www.uk.example.com, www.fr.example.com. This is the cheapest & easiest option but it will only help you rank a little bit better in those countries. It does let you cater content to each specific country and it does give your main site more authority.

If you are just going to market the main site then setting up sub domains for each region (de.example.com, fr.example.com), which are hosted locally within the target regions, can work as well. Even if you go this route you should still register example.de, example.fr, etc. and redirect them to the sub domains – in case people try to type them in and/or if you later want to grow them out as their own sites.

Pros: Cheapest. You can cater content to specific regions. It will help you rank moderately better in each country.

Cons: You have less options and it will still be harder to rank in each country. It might not look as professional and visitors might not trust it as much although a lot of companies are still using this format.

Of the three options, the first will give you the most options at the lowest price but the best solution really depends on what you want to do with your online properties. It’s also important to note that your domain name might not even be available in other TLDs unless it is quite unique and then you may be lucky.

It might not be realistic to build 10 different sites with unique content right now – to target 10 different countries – but it should be an option if they’re planning to go international with your website.

Today, let’s delve deeper on actions we can take on the journey to online marketing success.

Again, we want to keep on the premise that success can come in simple and actionable steps.

Nothing complicated. Just a cycle that we have to keep doing…keep optimizing and…keep going.

This online marketing success cycle I’m going to show you today will lay out the path clearly for you. There is no need to reinvent the wheel. Just do it.

By the way, this cycle is not devised by me. Been used with great effect by many successful online businesses. So you know it works. And it was first pointed out to me by one of the best marketers I know – Paul Myers of TalkBizNews.

So here goes:

1. Sell Products

Most obvious start. You don’t make money by selling air. So you create on product that has a demand and meets a need or is a solution to a problem – and sell it. Then money will flow in.

2. Generate Subscribers

You wanna keep a list of prospects and customers. For those that don’t buy the first time round, you can follow up with them and sell them again. And you can sell them alternatives product. Importantly, build a relationship with them.

For those that bought from you before, they can buy again. So keep working with them.

3. Recruit Active Affiliates

The best salesman don’t do everything himself. He gets others to sell for him…to spread the word for him. So we are talking about leverage and scalability here. It will help kick-start your profits to another level.

4. Generated Targeted Traffic

Get in front of people who actually want your product. People who are actually relevant. You will get higher conversion, and your sales process will be more effective and efficient.

5. Generate Links

You need to generate link to form pathways for traffic to come to you. More pathways to your site = more presence = more traffic = more potential profit!

6. Create Products

Keep creating products for a wider audience. More products out there, and more chances for you to increase your revenue.

7. Build Network

You want to own your network. You don’t want to be sorely dependent on a single source of incoming traffic. You want a big network…of various branches and channels, where there are people that knows you and your products.

8. Go Back To Point 1

Rinse and repeat!

That’s all there is to it. Not that difficult after all right?

Your comments are welcome.

All Success,

Sometimes it can be a dinner. Or a drink out. Or maybe even golf.

You just do what it takes to seal the deal.

Now, entertaining a client is a fine art. You may laugh along with him, even when his jokes are not funny…listen to his needs and grouses…agree with him on discussed issues…basically doing everything right to make him like you.

All well and good. You are on the right track…

BUT…remember NEVER ever to do one thing…

The one thing that may seems so small on the surface but may swing the favor against you…

That is when it comes to payment…and when you rightly foot the bill…NEVER NEVER EVER ask for a receipt in your client’s presence.

NEVER!

Why?

When you do so, you make your client feel that he is just part of a business set up. And that entertaining him just means incurring business expenses to get his business.

You want to go beyond that. You want to make him feel like he is a friend. A friend worth spending on. A friend whose time and relationship you value a lot.

Your client is gonna feel you care about him. Yes it may be a small gesture. But it helps. You never know what long term business he may give to you in future.

The few dollars spent can be worth it’s weight in gold.

In any case, most of the time, a receipt will given to you without you asking, which you can still claim as business expense anyway. You just don’t ask for a receipt if one is not given to you.

Bottom line – treat your customer like king – and sincerely do so. Help them first. And they will help you back – many folds over!

As usual, let me know what are your thoughts on this. I’m all ears.

All Success,

How do we define open rate?

Say you send out an email to 100 people. If 1 of those open up your email, it is an open rate of 1%.

The open rate gives you a good indication of how well your email campaign is going. And how your subscribers are responding to you.

There are many ways to increase your open rate, but today I’m gonna talk about how to optimize your email subject title – probably one of the single most important elements that drives open rates – as one of the ways.

Truth be told, these techniques I’m about to reveal to you are so simple, you might laugh and say these are nothing new.

But remember – simple works.

Let’s go in details…

1. Include the word ‘you’ in the title if you can…

2. Incorporate ‘benefit’ and ‘curiosity’ element in your subject headline

Talk in terms of everyone favorite radio station – WIIFM – “What’s In It For Me”. And invoke their curiosity enough to prompt their itchy finger to click through.

3. End off your subject headline with 3 triple dots (“…”)…

This is to create a “to be continued” feeling that you will compel your reader to want to click to find out more…

4. Include your branding in front of the subject headline. For example, your company name is “Profitable Marketing”, then your headline can start with “[Profitable Marketing] Headline xxxxx….”

The front branding tag is to allow your subscribers to immediately identify that the email is coming from you. Once they know you well enough, they will start clicking through more consistently.

Also having the front tag differentiates your email from the sea of other emails in your subscribers’ inbox.

There. Find them useful? Got more to add? Let me know. I’m all ears…

All Success,

Ironic as it sounds, it can be – provided you know how to do it right.

I have to confess this apply more effectively towards the informational marketing niche. More specifically digital informational products.

You see. In the digital informational product arena, almost everything gets pirated. It is the reality of the game you have to face up to.

Everything can be downloaded and distributed, whether you like it or not.

E-books. Mp3. Graphics. Videos. Games. All can be easily ripped off.

With the explosion of file sharing sites and peer-to-peer network (P2P), it is only a matter of time before you find your product up there within those ranks too.

So How Do We Solve This Darn Problem?

Well…as they say, if you can’t win ‘em…join ‘em!

Wait up! I’m not talking about being a pirate yourself, silly. But about how to turn it around – to your advantage!

Think about it.

There are millions of free-loaders and pirates wanting your product for FREE! Just check out the tonnes of traffic file sharing or torrent sites like Warez and PirateBay receive.

What does this mean?

There is a big ready audience for you out there! And if they download your product, chances are they are very targeted!

And because they come to your product, instead of YOU…going to them, they are much more qualified. They actually want your product, goddamn it!

If your product gives them sufficient value, you can easily sell to them later!

Can you see the various profitable possibilities forming already?

This is what you can do:

1. Have an opt in form in your e-book product or include a read-me text that gives them a link to your opt in form. Tie that in with an incentive.

Just do anything to allow those ‘thieves’ to see your incentivized offer, and get their names. Now you actually know who these people are once you capture their names.

Congratulations. You have just leveraged on the pirates to build your list.

Can you sell to them again? Yes you can. Go ahead. Up-sell and cross-sell these suckers! Tie in with one-time offers and all those marketing gimmicks you can think of. It’s payback time!

2. Include affiliate links in your product. If they don’t want your product, there is always a chance they may click on your affiliate link. And you can profit from that.

Pretty neat eh?

3. Gather all your freebie stuff you already plan to give away. Go distribute to all the file sharing and torrent sites. Just google them if you don’t know any.

And incorporate the 2 techniques above.

Better still, make your stuff re-brandable with their affiliate links, and you just give them an incentive to distribute the product for you.

There you go. You can unleash a viral campaign – with the help of pirates! Not too bad if I do say so myself.

Okay. What you waiting for? Let’s get cracking!

This is just another way to turn something disadvantageous around to your favor.

As always, I love to hear your views on this. I’m all ears.

All Success,

Damn, where have I been? It’s time to right a wrong. And this entry will be the start of more viral marketing stuff to come. You can bet on it.

But first, what the heck is viral marketing?

Let me attempt to explain.

You got a flu before right? Chances are, you probably got that shit from some guy. And that particular guy could have gotten it from another. And you just happened to be at the end of the chain.

Or maybe not, if you are not treated properly. You gonna pass that shit to someone else.

Alright, I hope you get the drift.

In a more formal marketing speak, viral advertising refer to marketing techniques that use preexisting social networks to produce increases in brand awareness, through repeatable viral processes.

It is similar to how pathological and computer viruses spread.

There are lots of viral marketing techniques you can use to spread the awareness of your product or service. I’m going to talk about just 11. 11 simple techniques (I know…11 is a weird number) even a kid can pull off.

Kid-ishly-simple, but it certainly isn’t child’s play in terms of effectiveness.

1. Word-of-Mouth

This is a no-brainer. You get people talking about it. How? Have loads of quality. And I mean LOADS of VALUE-ADDED QUALITY. A whole truckload of it. And then you add some more, with some icing if you will.

That’s right. Some people tend to focus on many other matters, but they forget the fundamental essence – the quality.

If you produce a product or service of genuine quality, the word will get out. Introduce funny, innovative and unique elements – you get a winning mix.

Remember Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’? Where he did the wiggly crazy moves with those saliva-spewing zombies, and had every kid in the world skipping school, watching his MTVs and imitating his every jiggle?

That’s cool. That’s real. That’s just…damnnnnnn good!

2. Viral videos

Video marketing is hot. Youtube is hot. According to Alexa, Youtube’s traffic is ranked a heavenly 3rd with only the mammoth Google and Microsoft standing in it’s way.

You know what that translate to? HUMINGOUS T-Rex sized amount of traffic!

So as you can see, the audience and traffic is already there. The fruit is ripe for the picking.

Put up a buzz-worthy video, packed with solid content, and watch your influence and presence spread virally.

3. Newsletter/E-Newsletter

Newsletter are one of the very best ways to reach out your audience.

Just take a look at Early To Rise and Daily Reckoning – two of Agora Publishing (300 million dollar business, mind you!) flag ship’s newsletters.

Over a million subscribers in total. Ton of value-added content. Need I say more?

They are cheap to produce and have massive reach. Include a call to action which can be a tell-a-friend to kick-start the viral effect.

If the tell-a-friend mechanism is incentivized, or the content is genuinely good, people will tell.

Better yet, include a soft copy PDF report version of your newsletter whereby readers can download to their computer for their reference offline.

Again, include a tell-a-friend call-to-action in the PDF report. Use every single opportunity to get your readers to refer a friend. Works powerfully.

4. Free Report

Come out with a free and useful report and have it made available to your readers for download in exchange for an email address.

If you are very confident of your content and that you want to build up a strong trust factor with your readers, you may want to make the download available – without the opt in.

If you think they will really find it useful, then have a message to prompt them to download at the end of the report. You will be surprised at how well this may turn out.

What will be even better is if you make your report re-brandable with their names and affiliate links. That will provide an incentive for them to give away your report.

Your readers will be happy to give value to others by providing a high quality report, and yet at the same time, they stand to gain monetarily if their referees decide to buy through their affiliate links.

Kill two birds with one stone right?

5. Article Marketing

Article marketing is one of the most powerful way of boosting your online presence – virally!

There are loads of article directories you can submit your articles to, such as ezinearticles.com

Imagine. Someone with a high traffic site decide to publish your article. They look at your bio profile, and they come clicking to your page.

Free, targeted and potentially huge traffic that can go on a period of time. All these with just a one time effort.

Again, the quality of your articles will be a crucial factor towards how successful the viral impact of your articles will be.

6. Tell-A-Friend script

You want someone to refer a friend? Then make it easy for them. Have a script for them to fill in the relevant details in the form.

Have the form included in whatever pages you can think of.

At the end of each posts in your blog (like mine. *hint*). Your thank-you page after someone has brought your product. Your 404 error page (make use of this!). Your download page.

Think out of the box.

7. Signature

Have your signature with a link in your email or forum signature. Back that up with a call-to-action incorporated with a benefit statement, and watch traffic rush through to your site.

8. Master Resell Rights

If you want to grant master resell rights, first, you need to have a product. Giving master resell rights allows that person to sell to someone for 100% profit, whereby the buyer can then in turn sell to another.

Needless to say, the resell license have to be bought, but the content inside cannot be changed, unless stated so. That means your logo and your branding can all be kept intact.

You have someone spreading your influence for you. Without you having to do all the hard work.

If your product is a hot selling one, you will get many resellers beating down the door to sell your product for you.

The buyers become sellers. The seller’s buyers become sellers themselves. And the viral chain goes on and on – to your profit!

9. Affiliate Marketing

Similar to the above point. The only difference is that you get someone selling for you and you give them a cut for the sale they bring in.

Zero marketing cost. Zero risk (financially-wise). But very rewarding. Affiliate marketing will ensure huge amount of brand and product awareness leverage for you.

Some people give out 100% commission to motivate their affiliates. And they get all the profits at the back-end.

Not a strategy that fits every business. But still a powerful one you can consider implementing.

Importantly, you may want to make it easy for affiliates to sign up and provide all the marketing materials your affiliates need.

10. Contest

Contest are very good for creating buzz. Especially so if your contest involves very attractive prizes tied in with a tell-a-friend element.

If done right and enough creativity is exercized, contest can be a great publicity generating machine.

11. Giveaways

FREE.

Oh yes. The magical word to most people’s ears.

Mention that and you will get many interested.

FREE + Quality giveaways + Incentive for referral (e.g. affiliate link for back-end product) = MASSIVE exposure!

Think about it.

Okay, I’ve written long enough. Your turn now. How do you generate buzz and get people talking about you and your product?

Let’s share it!

All Success,
