Are you feeling the recession blues yet?

Many are. And if you look around you, companies every week is short of cash.

Everything is being cut back.

Competition is greater than ever. But customers are getting lesser. How?

Michael Masterson teaches that a good strategy – an evergreen one at that – is to under-price your competition.

For the cost conscious clients, cash is king. If you can fulfill the same service but at a lower price than your competitors, you are bound to seen as attractive.

Personally, I found that to be true. But price shouldn’t be the only focus.

It’s also about delivering well on your service. And to stress the value of your service is much more higher than the price you charge. So your customer will feel that they gotten a great deal.

I say don’t shortchange yourself. Go ahead to under-charge if you need to. But over-deliver. And let the client know that.

If you charge $1, let them know you are delivering $10 in value. Your clients are happy. And that can be a good start to a long term relationship. Everyone profits.

I leave you to enjoy the article by Paul Lawrence below. It’s a good read for businessmen everywhere.

"However valuable your product is… however clever your marketing… nothing will grow your customer base faster than under-pricing the competition."

- Michael Masterson

A Tried-and-True Recession-Busting Strategy for Winning Customers

By Paul Lawrence

No matter what kind of business you run, I have a secret that can help you make money even while the recession has your clients’ wallets shut tight.

To tell you the truth, this secret is a good way to make money any time.

Andrew Carnegie, Marshall Field, Sam Walton, and Henry Ford are among the mega-wealthy who put this strategy to work.

As Michael Masterson has pointed out, it is "behind many – if not most – of America’s greatest fortunes." In fact, says Michael, "It may be the most important secret a businessman can know, for it is the most powerful and most reliable way to make a small business grow."

But many businessmen are afraid of this strategy… and many others simply overlook it.

I’m talking about undercutting the competition.

Andrew Carnegie was able to produce steel cheaply. Marshall Field cut the price of retail shopping. Sam Walton’s Wal-Mart started offering food, clothing, and other goods at rock-bottom prices. Henry Ford made automobiles that the average Joe could afford. All of these men went on to make massive fortunes.

Under-pricing your competition is an exceptionally effective way to rake in profits during lean times.

An interesting article in the Orlando Sentinel recently reported on a number of businesses that have been booming during the recession. Now when you think of "recession-proof" businesses, credit repair services and pawnshops are likely to come to mind. But the Sentinel mentioned several "atypical" businesses that are doing well, including a bank, a restaurant, and an advertising agency.

They are all very different kinds of businesses, but they have something in common: Their focus is on saving their customers money.

Even during a recession, there are some goods and services that people must buy. And if you can save your customers money while giving them what they need, you can make a bundle.

Here’s how to use this undercutting strategy for your business:

Survey the competition and determine if you can offer the same value for less.

Many small businesses do not even consider charging less for their products and services, no matter what their competition is doing. They settle on a certain price, because they figure that is what it "should" be. And if the economy changes and times get tough, they don’t consider lowering their price, because that’s what they’ve always charged. (Mom-and-pop operations are often guilty of this.)

One of the first successful small businesses I began was a swimming pool maintenance company. When I surveyed what my competitors were charging and calculated my costs, I saw ample room for charging less. Back then, monthly pool service was going for around $45-$50. But I figured out that if I used part-time workers and kept my overhead very low I could charge only $35 and still make a decent profit. When I began promoting my service at that price, I immediately signed up quite a few customers.

I’ve used the same strategy to start other businesses. When, for example, I went into ballroom dance instruction, most studios were charging $60 per hour. But I realized that I didn’t need a studio of my own. By renting space by the hour and also giving private lessons in my clients’ homes, I could charge just $30 an hour. That made dance lessons very affordable for many people who really wanted them, but couldn’t (or didn’t want to) pay $60.

Make sure your customers know that the quality will still be there.

Many small businesses have extra "fat" they can trim in order to cut their prices. But before you try to use this strategy to steal market share from your competitors, you have to make sure you can deliver the same quality for the lower price.

The first thing people will worry about when they see your bargain price is that they’ll be getting less in terms of quality and/or service. And if you can’t deliver, your customers will quickly leave you. One way to reassure them is to itemize everything they’ll be getting for the price so they can compare it to what your competitors are offering. (That’s what I did with the swimming pool business.) You should also offer a money-back guarantee. That is a good way to make your customers feel confident that you will offer high-quality products and services.

Undercutting your competitor’s prices is an admittedly aggressive strategy. But the business world is a harsh one… especially in this economy. If you want to prosper, you’ve got to be "Street Smart."

And I must say it was a great list! It’s sooo good I even had it printed out for my reference.

So here it is in it’s entirety. I’m sure you will take away something from this as I have.

Enjoy!

1. It’s got to be a BIG idea that you, your team and your customers can "get" in seconds.

2. Strive to create 10x — 100x in value for any price you charge. Your rewards are always proportionate to the value you provide.

3. You must charge a premium price so you have a large margin to provide an extraordinary value & experience.

4. Provide a ‘Reason Why’ customers should do business with you and pay you a premium.

5. Get paid before you deliver your product or service. And when possible figure out how to create recurring revenue from transactions.

6. You get to make the rules for your business. Don’t let industry norms dictate how you’ll work or who you’ll work with.

7. Create your business around your life instead of settling for your life around your business.

8. Consistently and constantly force yourself to focus on the ‘critically few’ proactive activities that produce exponential results. Don’t get caught up in minutia & bullshit.

9. Seek to minimize start-up risk but have maximum upside potential.

10. Get your idea out there as fast as possible even if it’s not quite ready by setting must-hit deadlines. Let the market tell you if you have a winner or not. If not — move on and fail forward fast! If it’s got potential — then you can make it better.

11. Find partners and team members who are strong where you are weak and appreciate being paid on results.

12. Your reputation always counts. Honor your obligations and agreements.

13. Never, ever get paid based on hours worked.

14. Leverage your marketing activities exponentially by using direct response methods and testing.

15. Measure and track your marketing so you know what’s working and what’s not.

16. Bootstrap. Having too much capital leads to incredible waste and doing things using conventional means.

17. Your partners and employees actions are their true core — not what they tell you.

18. Keep asking the right questions to come up with innovative solutions. "How?", "What?", "Where?", "Who Else?" & "Why?" open up possibilities.

19. You’ll never have a perfect business and you’ll never be totally "done". Deal with it.

20. Focus most of your time on your core strengths and less time working in areas you suck at.

21. Make it easier for customers to buy by taking away the risk of the transaction by guaranteeing what you do in a meaningful way.

22. Always have something else to sell (via upsell, cross-sell, follow-up offer, etc) whenever a transaction takes place. The hottest buyer in the world is one who just gave you money.

23. Always go back to your existing customers with exceptional offers and reasons they should give you more money. It’s 5x less expensive to sell to happy customers than go find new ones.

24. However the flip side is – fire your most annoying customers. They’ll be replaced with the right ones.

25. The marketplace and competitors are always trying to beat you down to a commodity. Don’t let that happen.

26. Develop and build your business’s personality that stands out. People want to buy from people.

27. Create your own category so you can be first in the consumer’s mind.

28. Go the opposite direction competitors are headed — you’ll stand out.

29. Mastermind and collaborate with other smart entrepreneurs if they have futures that are even bigger than their present.

30. Celebrate your victories. It’s too easy to simply move on to your next goal without acknowledging and appreciating the ‘win’.

31. Make your business AND doing business with you FUN!

32. Do the unexpected before and after anything goes wrong so customers are compelled to ‘share your story’.

33. Get a life! Business and making money are important but your life is the sum total of your experiences. Go out and create experiences & adventures so you can come back renewed and inspired for your next big thing.

34. Give back! Commit to taking a % of your company’s sales and make a difference. If this becomes a habit like brushing your teeth pretty soon the big checks with lots of zeros won’t be scary to write. If you think you can’t donate a percentage of your sales simply raise your price.

Just as simplicity in trading stocks work, it does also when it comes to marketing online. Or even offline for that matter.

So here are some simple rules I’m gonna lay down for you.

If you wanna win in the market, then concentrate on having…

Now, I’m not about to suggest that you proclaim to the world that email sucks…

Nope, nothing of that sort.

What I want to talk about is not on whether email is effective as a marketing/business tool (it is!), but the way email is being used!

How is it so? Emails are great for presenting a pitch, passing complements as well as touching on positive messages. That’s fine.

It’s different when you send emails to someone to communicate doubts and debate/argue. It’s bad. Very bad…

Before I move further, I want to touch a bit on the subject of human psychology first.

In an offline sales pitch, you like to excite the senses of both sight and sound of your prospect.

That’s why you speak when you pitch. And you also show them documents, powerpoint presentation, video and so on when you want to strengthen your case.

When you speak…it appeals to their emotion…and when they can see…it appeals to their logic.

Moving back to emails…, this time round, the voice element is gone. Only the words are there. When a person reads something, he tends to take it more seriously. Because, as the saying goes, seeing is believing!

When you send an email to give a different view point, hostility may sometimes result. Even when it may not be your intention to engage in an argument.

The other side reading the email, believes what he reads, and tend to take it in another light – often a more negative one. And when he engage in a lengthy defending reply back, that is when the shit starts.

Both sides get emotional, and written volleys are exchanged back and forth. And the war escalates…

I hope you know what I’m trying to get through to you.

Use emails for compliments or to communicate messages of a positive (or neutral) nature.

But DON’T use it for confrontation or argument. If you have to, keep the email as short as you can. And then meet up or call to settle the matter.

Often, business deals are lost, and relationships are broken, when people just insist on using emails to settle an issue. A face-to-face talk could have been so much more effective in dealing with such situations.

What do you think? Ever got into trouble over an email? Let me know. I’m all ears.

All Success,

You know sales is all about persuasion. It’s a lot about getting your prospects to see your point of view.

And getting him to feel the value of your product such that it is worthwhile for him to invest in it.

Obviously, if you are going to sell to him, you gotta talk to him. And often, that’s when shit happens.

That’s when the pitch often gets screwed up. This can happen even if you know your stuff….even if your product is excellent…even if your offer is compelling.

You must be wondering what could possibly go wrong? That will…if you….

TALK TOO MUCH!

Yes! That’s what a lot of salesmen tend to do. They get too engrossed in selling that they shove every single details down the poor throat of the suffocating prospects.

They will just go on…and on…and on…

Take a moment to pause here. And think.

When you sell, you are selling for whose reasons?

Your reasons? Or your prospect’s reasons?

Your prospect.

Your prospect buy because of his reasons.

And how the heck are you going to sell to him when you just keep talking and not start asking about his needs?

You could very well have been boring the nuts out of him.

Telling Is Not Selling. Asking Is.

Instead of going on like a torrent of gushing water, talk and ask intermittently.

Give information, benefits. And then ask. Information…benefits…ask.

Repeat.

Engage your prospect. Find out what he really wants. And zoom in on that. And keep hitting him with information he wants to know.

You are much more likely to snag a deal with this approach.

Why am I writing on this? Because I’m the kind who can go on and on. Or rather I used to be. It was a very very bad habit. I hold my hands on that. So now I’m sharing with you all my bad stuff. Don’t repeat my mistakes.

Lucky for me, I have made the conscious effort to change. Have you? Are you guilty of the above?

If yes, you know what to do now right?

As usual, let me know what you think. I’m all ears.

If you are a salesman, you may understand that it is vital to learn how to observe your prospect’s body language.

Is he listening to you?

Is he warming up to you?

is he buying your pitch?

Or is he simply plain disinterested? And shutting himself out and away from you?

You need to know. His body language will give you many hints. With that, you will be able to better understand if you are heading in the right direction.

And if you are not, you can prepare yourself to change the angle of your pitch rather than blabber on (a mistake I used to make…and still do sometimes!).

So what are the tell-tale signs?

Let me explain:

He folds his arm (But could also be that he is feeling cold).

He takes off and puts his glasses on the table during the conversation.

He strums his fingers repeatedly on the table (tell-tale sign that he is getting impatient).

He touches his neck repeatedly (meaning you are being a pain in the neck!).

He looks over the top of his glasses (he is disapproving of what you are saying).

He leans his head to one side on his hands (he is bored shitless!),

There.

Have anyone ever done these to you before? Think about it.

And the next time you converse with someone, look out for such body language. Detecting the warning signs early allows you to change your pitch, recover and quickly get yourself back on track again.

I will talk about how to engage the person you are talking to and persuade him to your point of view in my future posts.

Meanwhile, let me know what you think, I’m all ears.

All Success,
