Don’t think too much – Just do it!
Picture this scenario. You chance upon a great idea. You look at it. You scrutinize it. You dissect it, strip it apart, look and relook. Analyze and re-analyze, probing all possibilities and it’s feasibility.
When that is done, you do more research, trying to learn everything and anything under the sun, until you feel so burnt and stressed out that you want to literally smash your own head in the wall.
Sounds familiar?
I know for that matter, many Internet marketers and business owners are often faced with situations.
Ok I don’t deny all these stuffs are essential. Planning for a business is of paramount importance to me. I personally spend weeks of planning and refining until I reach a business plan which I feel is sustainable in the long term and do-able. The planning of the foundation is absolutely crucial
Having said that, more often than not, there is a tendency to over-research and trying to know as much as possible. This is simply impossible.
It really doesn’t help when there are tonnes of resources out there. I know for sure, in my case, whenever I come across some readily available ‘important’ and ‘urgent’ information that is related to my business model, I will like to immediately read and try to understand it. The irresistible temptation to search for more answers and clues to success.
Feels good at first on tasting the new nuggets of ‘precious’ information. Then the weariness of reading too many words comes in. Finally it comes to a point of information overload! Overkill if you will.
Yes that bloody dreaded familiar feeling of not wanting to be left behind, hence going on the the ceaseless but often futile attempt of trying to soak in as much information as one can take till the brain can squeeze in no more, which then culminate in an explosion! You know the kind you see in a volcano eruption.
Ok I’m exaggerating here, but you get the gist.
I’ve since learnt my lesson.
.

.
.
.
Or at least trying real hard to.
Nowadays, I plan my objectives in advance and focus on it. I will put any new information that comes along on hold, unless it’s absolutely crucial to the success of the aims I’ve mapped out.
I guess I have to accept it really is practically impossible to learn everything under the sun in one go. The learning journey is an on-going process. Planning and researching too much can be more counter-productive instead, since work is not actually being started, when all the time is being consumed by staring at e-books, videos and instructional newsletters.
To me, the best solution will be to plan generally and have a rough feel of the direction. Go into deeper specifics if you must but don’t spend too much time on it. Once everything is conceptualized, just go ahead and start on it. You will definitely learn as you go along.
Keep looking around for more to add things in here and there, and you can be sure you will never ever get moving!
I’m not saying that we shouldn’t be detailed in our planning or that we should cut corners and go easy in the approach. What I really meant is that while it is good to cover every angle, there will still be some areas which we will not initially foresee or be able to cater and adjust to.
The best way is to follow and stay true to the initial plan, accept a few tweakings and fine-tuning along the way, and shut off all distracting noises. Leave the additional information to the later part once the original goals have been fulfilled.
In doing so, I save myself loads of time, ended up being more efficient in my tasks, and more importantly, keep myself from going bonkers from too much information digestion!
So the next time you come across an ‘all important perfect’ resource, just say “nahhhhhhhh, next time”! Or maybe you can email it to me. I will help you take a look first and determine if it’s worth spending time for. Why waste your precious time? =)
