I've not been blogging for the past 2 days, as there were some matters occupying my time lately. In between, I still see a flow of visitors coming in. While it's nothing to shout about as compared to other much higher profile blogs, I'm still thankful! Recently I came across a very interesting and thought provoking story at Mirchi's blog, and the topic is on Google actually wanting to be sued by media companies over the copyright issues surrounding Youtube. At first glance, it sounds like your usual conspiracy theories you hear often. You know the George-Bush-is-Behind-911-attack kind of story. On further reflection, I'm beginning to think, yea, it does make sense. Seriously, the world is not as simple as one may think. There are a lot of political maneuvering and cat-and-mouse games out there. There will always be someone lurking somewhere waiting to pounce and eat an unsuspecting victim for dinner. In the case of Google and Youtube impending slugfest with media companies like Viacom, who wants to sue the poo-poo out of Big G in a 1 billion dollars lawsuit, I think that there is definitely more than meets the eye. Google is not stupid. The legal issues surrounding Youtube is massive, but yet unclear and ambiguous at the same time. Google obviously know what it is getting itself into. To take over Youtube, knowing full well that there will be legal implications that will definitely arise in future, only serves to show that Google is supremely confident and prepared. Such bravado can only come from one of the fastest growing company in corporate history ever. Even if they have no case, media firms will think twice about messing with Google. They are issuing an either-you-are-with-me-or-against-me challenge to all the other media companies. It is rather evident that Google wants to bring these media firms to the negotiating table and thrash matters out. Perhaps the media companies do realize that they are dealing with a titan that is Google, and it is in their best interest to negotiate out of court and reach a win-win situation. Already, we have NBC Universal, CBS and Universal Music Group coming to a settlement with Google. However it looks like Viacom is bucking this trend, with prior talks having broken down. Confident as Google may be, this is still a speculative gamble in my book. It is either they win spectacularly or die spectacularly. If every single media firms who feel their rights have been violated come together and form an alliance against Google, we could have a real fight on our hands. Unlikely? The world is always ever ready to throw us unexpected surprises. Let's watch and see. tag:, , , , , , , ,

You are right. I am glad I was not the only one speculating this conspiracy theory. Google bought youtube with a billion bucks and more already when there were talks about youtube violating many laws and now they are getting sued for a billion dollars. First of all I do belive that loosing out a billion dollars for Google will not be a big deal for Google, thats if they do. And for a moment just think about it, what if Google wins? All of a sudden google will own the media. I am sure they have a bigger plan with youtube than rather the current business model. Now the questions remains to be answered is, what exactly is the bigger plan?

    Hi Shawn,

I think Google has it all planned out. While I’m love Google, I shudder to think the day when it owns a monopoly of the media.

As the saying goes, “All power corrupts and absolute power corrupt absolutely.”
If not Google will be in danger of being Microsoft no. 2!

It’s an interesting theory, but I don’t buy it.

I do believe that we’re seeing a convergence of tv and online video and Google is at the forefront of that revolution. But nobody wants to get sued and a billion dollars is a lot of money, even for Google.

No, I think Viacom is hardball negotiating. They’re not liking the prices that Google is offering. There only other option is to sue. And although they may have a good case it’ll be tied up in litigation for quite a while. Meanwhile if Google diligently works to take their stuff off of YouTube, they’re not going to get any exposure.

Viacom is rolling the dice and they might just miss the revolution, because all the other media companies will benefit from the exposure they get from YouTube.

    Hi Shane,

For sure, Google knows that there are a lot to be gained by buying over Youtube. Definitely it is revolutionizing the way people is using videos online to share and form a community.

However copyright is a big big issue. We cannot deny that there are a lot of stuffs that shouldn’t be there that are up there. Google is threading on some precarious ground if every media firms just decide that they will stand to gain more by ganging up against Google to get more money.

Having said that, I think it will be in the best interest for everyone to reach a win-win solution. After all exposure for all is important like you pointed out. It is going to be interesting to see how the whole affair develop.

    Cheers,
