Recession? Don’t Join ‘Em. Beat ‘Em.

no recession!I came across some recession-beating tips from Bob Bly – one of the best direct response marketers you can find.

He got them from BusinessWeek.

I thought these tips are pretty
neat and useful. So I’m putting them here for your benefit.

Enjoy!

***5 ways to thrive in a recession***

BusinessWeek recently gave these 5
suggestions for navigating
your business through the
current economic storm:

1–Don’t panic. Cycles happen.
Sometimes they happen hard, but
we’ll come back around eventually.

2–Keep marketing. Slowdowns are an
ideal time to snatch up
market share.

3–Stick to your focus.
Don’t water down your message in a
misguided attempt to widen
your market appeal.

4–Don’t go "discount crazy."
If you keep offering "special
deals," eventually the deals are no
longer special… and
customers learn to wait for the
next deal instead of buying
right now.

5–Have a plan. You can’t wish the
crisis away by ignoring it.

Have a fantastic weekend,

And as usual, let me know your thoughts.

All success,

Jag Foo

Good thoughts here. Reminds of “It’s a Wonderful Life” when George and Mr. Potter were the only ones to keep their heads during the bank collapse. The result was they both became bigger due to being able to ride out the storm.

Jag, nice post, thanks.
I’m actually phylosophical about the recession, crysis and credit crunch. All this should have happened earlier or later, so let’s just live through this and hope the life will become even better afterwards. There’s no point to get angry – if we work hard, we’ll be ok, recession or no recession.

@Nick:

You are right. Now is not the time
to feel sorry and get pitiful.

Get the head down and emerge
ahead of others!

@ The recession – we had
it coming with all those
economic mis-management that is
going on in the US.

The recession can be an
opportunity. Let’s grab them
together!

Cheers,
Jag

People need to find the opportunities in the recession instead of seeing only bad things. I feel the recession gets perpetuated because people have lost all optimism.

The best advice here is do not water down your message. If you stick to your guns and keep up what you have been doing (assuming it was working in the past) you will have no problems in a recession. Regards!

Keep working as hard as you can, and watch your competitors stumble, and be there to pick up the extra business.

Good points , What I liked most is that market is going discount crazy these days which is not good for anybody .they should think that giving discounts which are not required are not good for health of complete market

Very good tips, useful for both traditional brick-and-mortar businesses and marketing as well as online marketing. It’s very tempting to want to broaden your market, but it’s the businesses that stay focused and make a point to do what they do well that remain successful in difficult times.

Instead of trying to survive with that single method.Try to divert the users or customers attention and draw them to your products or services.Best of all to be optimistic that your business will be to track in no time.

Thanks for the great tips to tackle recession! I guess most of us need it. During a recession, we should not try to save and not spend money on goods and services as we might go further into a recession. We should spend as usual so to allow the economy to expand and improve. This is a great article! Thanks for sharing.

@ Online Fashion Shopping:

In a recession, I think a lot of company will want to cut marketing budget first. I think that’s the worst thing a company can do.

The smarter ones will ramp up their’ and streak ahead!

@ Nick:

Yep. Keep the heads up. And don’t lose the shirt! Important to stay calm for sure!

Great tips for those that want to survive and thrive as the wheel of fortune turns. Think of now as the period before the next boom. What opportunities lay ahead for those that look at building a stronger position tomorrow opposed to simply worrying about today?

Nice advice in the present scenario. Now a days, online shopping is getting more and more familiar among the people. But one problem with online shopping is the fake websites. The best thing in online shopping is that you can save your time and need not strain in the rushed out shop.

First of all – don’t panic. Recession is not as bad as people make it out to be – we’re making it worse on ourselves by acting like we could go bankrupt every day and not investing (which further slows down the economy).

a recession is the best time to put your efforts into making it, the more you try and are not detered the more likely that the recession will not affect you as badly. it isnt going to go away over night but thats no reason you cant make the best out of a bad situation.

“Don’t Panic”. Finaly someone’s said it. I’m so tired of everyone acting like the world is going to end – your irrational actions only make the economy worse and worse.

You are right on the money with your marketing tip: don’t stop marketing during these difficult economic times. Most people I associate with are being more aggressive in their pursuits now, but I tend to hang around the right people with positive attitudes. I’m sure people are giving up out there and that is sad.
